Clarinet Trio (2007)

for clarinet, violin and piano
I. A Distant Haze (after Virginia Woolf)
II. The Wild Swans
commissioned by Helena Berg, Uriel Vanchestein, & Liza Stepanova

The Clarinet Trio was written for violinist Helena Berg, clarinetist Uriel Vanchestein, and pianist Liza Stepanova in the summer of 2007 and was premiered in Berlin at Glienicke Palace, located on the island of Berlin-Wansee. The work is in two contrasting movements, each inspired by different writers that I love. The first movement, "A Distant Haze" was inspired by a line from Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse" and the second movement, "The Wild Swans" was inspired by Yeats's poem "Leda and the Swan." Similar to my violin/piano work "Echoes of Byzantium," I tried to capture the spirit of these writers without setting the text.
